If you have been following along, you know we are HUGE fans of STEM toys. Both of my kiddos have iPads and have their fair share of screentime. There are some amazing apps that teach my kiddos things that I wouldn’t even know where to begin to teach them. But I do like to balance their screentime with outdoor activities such as biking, running, and playing a sport. And I love when they have activities that make them use their hands and skills they are learning in school. Enter STEM toys.
STEM Toys
What is STEM? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. There are many toys that develop skills in each of the four areas, but then there are toys that overlap all 4 categories and you have a STEM toy. STEM toys encourage kids to develop skills in these core areas. Many skills and traits such as problem-solving, patience, cognitive thinking, teamwork, engagement, and team building are built while playing with STEM toys. Who wouldn’t love that? I know I do!
STEM Toys with KiwiCo Crate
So now enter the KiwiCo Crate. KiwiCo is a monthly subscription crate that comes filled with age-appropriate STEM projects for kids, from toddlers to teenagers. Every crate explores a different theme designed to spark creativity, thinking, and learning. KiwiCo provides an activity booklet for each crate! And everything required for your child to create their projects is included in the crate.
Audrey’s KiwiCo crate was the Spinning Top.
She was able to create several different tops with an easy to follow instruction guide. EVERYTHING is included in the crate. There is never a need for me to run to the store for extra little parts, everything is included. Then the booklet has several activities for her to do with her various spinners she has made. Audrey quickly learned how the spinners were engineered and was quickly looking around the house on ways to make it go faster or create several designs depending on what she attached to the spinner. Also, it was so much fun her imagination run wild with what she learned in such a short amount of time.
Brydon’s crate was the Arcade Catapult.
He couldn’t put it together fast enough to start playing all the games he was so excited. It honestly didn’t take him long and he was up and running. The tiles switch out to make it a different game each time. Also, he had a booklet teaching and explaining each part. And again, every part was included. No need to grab tape, glue, or paper!
It was a lot of fun watching the excitement in the kids eyes has they saw their creations they made by themselves come to life.
They loved using their hands and minds to build and create their own individual crate. Furthermore, I love that it isn’t just a one and done project. KiwiCo has thought of so many ways to engineer each crate that you can use them in multiple games and crafts. And to think each month it is a new crate and new toy to teach your kids how to build, engineer, use math and science all rolled into one!
